If you have had a look through this little website, you’ll probably have noticed a couple of things. . . . One, there’s what you might call a ‘random assortment’ of writing; two, we have an unconventional writing partnership.
So, here’s a bit of background, in case you’re curious. . . .
With the exception of one piece (on travel. . .alabama. . . .), all of this work is fiction. Clearly, there’s a lot of truth in fiction, and it’s also true that many budding writers start with work that’s largely autobiographical. But, everything here is fiction. This isn’t our autobiography. This isn’t fact. This isn’t news. This is observational true fiction.
Most of the work in the ‘writings’ section are legacy pieces from when the website was launched several years ago under a different guise. And, in fact, most of the early work for that site was self-indulgent and not very good. . .hence the decision to keep only a few of the pieces that have sentimental value or that are particular personal favourites.
‘the book’ is just that — it is our attempt to write a book that we believe needs to be written. We want to consider how it is that a boy and a girl raised largely the same can become a man and woman with such different outcomes. We two are flawed human beings. We are also compassionate survivors. And, we are both aware of the impact of privilege and discrimination. These are things we want to talk about.
Of course, any writing partnership comes with its complications and complexities — tone, style, approach . . . temperament . . . . Being in two different locations can exacerbate that. When one of you is in prison, things become even trickier. But, we do what we can and we rely heavily on the USPS and Royal Mail. (Don’t ever let anyone tell you letter writing is dead!)
We hope you enjoy what you see. Do follow us if you’d like to know when we add new pieces.
Thanks for visiting!
